Praised for her “rare talent for breathing life into the instrument” (Tunite Music), French pianist Jeanne Hourez – former pupil of Anton Nel (among others) and advocate of both living composers and underrepresented voices in music – presents “Epiphany: Transcendence of the Piano ” – a recital featuring Allen McCullough’s Piano Sonata No.4 – “Epiphany” alongside a program dedicated to female composers. Written for Dr. Hourez, McCullough’s “Epiphany” is the 3rd work in a tetraptych cycle of sonatas. Featuring piano writing that is at turns poignant, virtuosic, melodically lush, cacophonous, and nostalgic, the musical narrative pursues and celebrates those rare moments of “epiphany” in which clarity elevates humanity to the sublime.
